In a previous practice, Charlie Powell had a well-developed coding education program by most standards. The practice did classroom education on a regular basis and used electronic medical recording (EMR) to capture the right information. Yet, in spite of this, their coding practices were still not as accurate as they should have been. Powell brought in Paragon to help solve the problem.
Having worked with Paragon at this previous practice, Powell felt confident they had the right stuff to work with Saint Thomas Heart.
Paragon was able to set up a new process that really worked. Paragon didn’t simply perform classroom education, they worked one on one with physicians and other team members to implement the new process. According to Powell, “While we had an internal coding team, we utilized Paragon to compliment and fill in some of the expertise gaps of our internal team.”
Powell goes on, “…while many practices are nervous about bringing in an outside coding service, there is almost always an opportunity to improve efficiency and fix critical problems. Let’s face it, it’s better to discover errors early and implement new processes than to face an audit later.”
